Prblems urinating after sling surgery

I am a 50 year old woman.  I had a sling put in November I also had antier posterior colphorry... I had a subpub cath and three weeks had it taken out. I then had to go  to the er to get recath because I get to full in the bladder and then I can't urninate at all!  I am now self cathing 4 times a day to decrease the size of the  bladder so that the bladder can contract I guess my bladder could hold alot.  I urinate 25-50 ml every time I go which is every hour to hour and a half, and this is not a big stream it just trickles.. but I am not emptying the bladder completly (when I cath I get 150-200) so I still have alot in there.  I do relax my pelvic muscles but still get the same amount, I am kegaling to increase muscle tone to see if that works any better... The Urologest said the sling is a sucess because i can urinate some and that we need to get the bladder muscles working better... and get to the bladder to a size that the muscles can start to contract correctly. It has already been a month how long does it take a bladder to get over the trauma of this.  I am expecting to much to soon.. You don't realize how you took urinating for granted til you have to start to measure it every time you go...

Hi, you could use our Private Messaging feature to chat with any other member on MedHelp.

This is a very old post and chances of someone from this thread responding or seeing this are slim.

You could also choose to post a question as a separate thread.

We wish you the best!
I read your post and am 6 week post tvt operation. I had inability to void without self cauterization for about 4 weeks. Then it became better. Still not prefect because I can't void at night. But then during the day I void multiple times closer together and towards the evening I'm voiding "normal" again every other couple of hours. Then at night its' the same thing all over. I used the cath last night and emptied 700cc!! The sling may be too tight, but the doctor told me to give it another 6 weeks to see if I have further improvement. Good luck to you. It should get a little better, but keep on top of it!

Thank you! I had urethral sling, vaginal hysterectomy and posterior repair done 1 week ago. I can dribble small amounts of urine but that's it, not emptying my bladder completely. Dr. Gave me some med for bladder spasms which seemed to help the spasms. I seem to pee best standing up in the shower (gross, I know), but at this point I'll do whatever works!! I am a nurse so I knew the risks, but never knew it could be like this! Very depressing. On the positive side - I don't feel any urge to pee or leaking at all when I sneeze!!

After a sling procedure, I had to self cath for about 6 months almost all of the time to urinate; however, it became easier over time and I only needed to use the catheter a few times daily at most.   What I noticed was that it didn’t seem like I was emptying my bladder and I would have to go again within a short time.  I also was getting horrible bladder infections every few weeks.

I did find that if I arched my back when urinating and placed pressure about an inch up and out on both sides of the anus that my flow became strong. I had to sort of experiment with the best location and amount of pressure and  how much to arch my back, but I am able to tell a huge difference and don’t retain urine.  I am not a doctor, but it seems like this sort of straightens out the urethra and allows the urine to flow.  I am about 10 months post surgery and with this technique I don’t have to use the catheter ever and I can feel that my bladder is emptying well.

Had a lap. hysterectomy on March 10th, one week later took myself to hospital cause i couldn't pee, they incerted a cetheter into me and sent me home, that was it. Then the next morning I woke up and there was nothing but blood. I took catheter out and called the doctor, next day went in and I wouldn't pee again placed another catheter in I started leaking, they took it out sent me home. All my incisions got infected 6 weeks later after hysterectomy went back 4 times because of the infection, she put me on cipro, the 3rd time in there i told her they are not healing she asked me If i was on antibiotics i said yes you perscribed me cipro and she states well that kind of antibiotics wasn't for that. SOOOO, 7 weeks later had trouble peeing again and leaking when i coughed and sneezed. Went to urologist he said I needed a bladder sling that Thursday he did the surgery not much pain before you leave you have to pee over 300 cc's,  I pee'd 250 cc's. They sent me home with a catheter and told me to remove it the next day and drink plenty of water, so I did, By the time 5 hrs went by I was hurting so bad I told them my eyeballs were floating. They made me wait out in the waiting room over a half an hour and didn't care I just had surgery not cared that I was hurting so bad I was almost in tears, and I have a very high threshold for pain. And on top of that I haven't pooped in 6 days and I am so bloated my husband had to get an enema (?) Ive nver had to do that, that was so degrading. It worked a little, I don't take pain medicine so thats not the cause. Anyway when i finally did get in there she did a bladder scan said you are not that full I was almost in tears, I would of done anything to pee. She cathed me and got 550 cc of pee, i don't know about you all but to me thats alot. then when I stood up I peed out another 100 cc, so that was 650 cc, but yet I wasn't full. Went home, 2 days later, I felt the catheter ball, it seemed like it was falling out, and then I peed all over myself. I went in the bathroom since it was a sunday night and removed the dern thing. I still couldnt pee, so my husband cathed me twice that night twice, I know he was not qualified nor was it safe but I had to go and hospital didn't seem to care last time I went in there. Called the doctor next morning told them what happened but left out the fact that my hubby cathed me, she made the statement you took it out the second time and was nasty with me. I told them the first time I did what I was told to do and the second time I was peeing on myself, so I didnt see the point of having it in, if I was going to pee on myself. Went in 1 hr later another docot came in and told me I shouldn't of taken it out they I was having bladder spasm's and they could of fixed it mind you it was sunday night. So she perscribed me Bactrim for infection and pyridum for pain. and told me to keep cath in for another week. with pyridum I don't feel anything, no urges or nothing and it scares me. I had the Hysterectomy on the 10th of March, and the bladder sling 28th of April. I know it takes time but I should be able to pee, and they didn't tell me this was going to be a very long time before I could pee on my own 1 week is too long when I was supose to go back to work on May 4th, 4 day procedure turns out to be going on 6 days and now another week, with catheter in. I dont have no money to pay my bilss I was suppose to turn to work today but I can't go into work with a catheter, it isn't possible where I work I work at a casino, I cant just leave my job if I had to catherize myself. Also with me leaking before I had the hysterectomy just a little, you would think she would of put the sling in then and I wouldn't have to deaql with the pain again, So far these simple so called procedures have costed me lots of money time away from work and the fact that the doctors don't tell you what could happen and give you choice, or give you all the information, I guess they think we are suppose to guess. I can't stand this anymore I want to seek an attorney but I don't think it will do any good. They all stick together, I dont' even know if I have a case against any of them, but I am mad and I hurt and I want and need to back to work, Sry I am venting so much but I have no one else to talk to but my husband and I think he thinks I am a winer, he wants me to contact and attorney too but I thinks he thinks I am over dramatic. If anyone has any input, please write me a ***@**** or here. I will be checking all day. I am sooooooo depressed don't know where to turn

My bladder sling is very similar to yours.  I had my sling done on Friday, February 6th and three weeks later I am still not voiding on my own. I have to use the Cath.  The doctor gave me Misoprostol but it does not seem to be working. I have 3 more days of Misoprostol left.  This was suppose to be a very simple operation and I was suppose to return to work on Tuesday.

I had my sling surgery on Dec 12th. My Dr told me that this would be an out patient surgery and that I would be able to return to work with no problems on Monday Dec. 15. I was unable to void after my surgery so they sent me home with a cath and told me to see my Dr on Monday. Monday came and after removing the cath I was still unable to empty my bladder. The Dr gave me a new cath and told me that I needed to be off of work until Dec 22nd. I went back on Thurs of the same week and still could not empty my bladder. On Monday Dec 22nd the Dr told me that I just needed to relax. He removed my cath and had his nurse teach me how to self cath. My Dr checked the angle of my urethra and made sure that the sling was not to tight. He told me that I would need to self cath until either the swelling went down or my bladder woke up. It has now been more than 3 weeks from my surgery. I am still having to self cath every time I need to urinate. I am only able to void small amounts (only a few onces) every once and a while. I called my Dr again (he is on vacation) and he called in a Rx for Flomax to help me relax my bladder muscles. My insurance won't authorize the Rx until they speek to my Dr (who is on vacation). I looked up Flomax and it is for prostates (I don't have one of those) and is not recommended for women.?????

I had TVT, anterier repair.  Doc said it was just the urethra that needed support.  Almost 2 weeks ago I went in for this surgery.  Surgery seemed to go well, nurse sent me home without voiding.  About 2 hours later needed to go, but couldn't no matter what.  Had to go back to doc and get a chath.  I had 500cc in bladder.  Cath stayed in for 2 days.  They tested my output by pushing sterile water into my cath and then having me void.  I did, and went how cath free.  Seemed good for about a day or two and then started having problems.  Was getting about 3-4 oz of urine each time, which went down to almost nothing and would have to try everything to just void a tiny bit.  Was in agony and went back to the doc daily.  I week after surgery went to doc and he gave me Detrol LA and the stuff that turns your urine orange as well as said to take advil 3x a day.  He said this should help me get through the night.  By midnight I was in a full anxiety attack because I couldn't void at all and felt like I needed to go.  Had to go to the ER and new cath put in.  There was 300cc in bladder.  Very depressed at this point, really upset.  Went back to doc next afternoon.  He did a little exam and said he thought I was healing and sling was a little tight.  Went in for emergency surgery that night at 9 to pull down sling by 2mm.  Stayed in hospital overnight with cath in.  I have never seen so much output before!  Took cath out around 7, voided at 8, 300cc after sitting there for a bit.  After another hour another 200cc.  Settled down that day and next, went every 2-4 hours between 225 and 375 cc.  Now am having to pee every hour and output is anywhere from 100cc to 300cc depending on if I can hold it for more than an hour or not.  I woke up 3 times to go to the bathroom last night.  Is this normal?  I am happy I can pee again, but scared that I'm gonna be running to the bathroom every few minutes for the rest of my life.  I have always had to go ALOT, but if I didn't drink anything it would slow down....before.  I am wondering if all the output is due to all the fluids that were pumped into me while in hospital the 2nd time.  I also feel like I strained to much this morning and had a bit of blood this morning, not sure if it's my period or if I popped a stitch.
Anybody been through something like this?  I could really use some encouragement.  At least I can pee again.  I would just like to feel normal again!!!!
