Prolonged numbness after using condom with benzocaine

Even though I didn't have a premature ejaculation problem, I decided to try out condoms with benzocaine just for a change. I used it twice a day everyday for about 12 days (we were on our honeymoon) and at around two weeks, it started to numb my penis and I started having a hard time maintaining the erection. I didn't attribute the problem to the condom, and continued using it every 3 or 4 days. Each time it became worse. After doing research, I figured out that it could be the overuse of benzocaine, but now I'm terribly worried about when/if this will every go away. Obviously I stopped using it but there is a sustained feeling of numbness in my penis area during the day, too. It just feels dead and numb all the time! It has also lessened my sex drive.  Benzocaine's effects aren't supposed to last that long, but I read online about certain cases that are similar to mine. We are being patient about waiting for the effects to subside but I just need to be sure that this will eventually - hopefully before too long- go away. Please advise!
