Prostate massage

Prostate massage

Dear Doctor,
My sleep is being continiously disturbed by having to get up usually twice during the night. Once I do not mind so much, but twice becomes disturbing to sleep and causes all sorts of other mild sleep deprivation problems which I would like to avoid as I age from my current 60 years. I tried medication several years ago, but with side effects. I would like to take a holistic approach. I daily take bet-sitosterol, 150mg plus a few other nutrients which form a "prostate specific nutrient complex" which helps but not a home run. I would like to try protate milking /  gentle massage. I would like to get your opinion on this approach in general for BPH and I would like to find a practicioner, preferrably a medical Doc, who can do the massage safely and without causing me subsequent problems. I appreciate your response. I live in Northern New Jersey.  Thank you,  Joe T.

I would consider a urologist to discuss this.

Typically prostatic massage is used for cases of prostatitis where any prostatic fluid expressed can be sent off for analysis and culture.  I am not aware of prostatic massage as a treatment for BPH.

Imaging the prostate can be considered with a transrectal ultrasound.

I would discuss these options with a urologist.
