Prostate trouble

Back in march, my prostate became enlarged causing a lot of pressure in my lower back and abdomen. I went to see my doctor and he ran a "PSA" test and placed me on cippro. My "PSA" test came back normal so he refered me to a Urologist. My Urologist tested my urine and placed me on several other medications.  After finding my urine normal, my doctor conducted a cystoscopy and found nothing significantly wrong. Meanwhile, I was experiencing a bad smell from time to time in my nose. The two problems seemed to be related. Since then, I have been to an ENT specialist, a Neurologist and a Psychiatrist. Each of these specialists have said that it's nothing serious. Does it appear that I may have non bacterial Prostatitus or Odinia? If so, what would you recommend for me at this point with reguards to futher treatment?

Dear Brent,
There are four general categories of prostatitis. These are: acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, non-bacterial prostatitis and prostatodynia. It is often difficult to definitively diagnose the type of disorder a patient may have. The routine for treatment, initially, is to use antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen regardless of the type. If you have a diagnosis of non bacterial prostatitis , the routine treatment following a course of antibiotics for about two weeks would include: prostatic massage, hot sitz baths, anti-inflammatory agents and occasionally diazepam. Further, avoidance of alcohol, caffeine and tobacco may help relieve the symptoms in certain individuals. As to the sense of bad smell that you have had, it is highly unlikely to be related to your prostatitis. I recommend close follow up  with your urologist for your prostate problem.
