The more
commonCommon cold reason of prostatitis is because of infection. It may be result of an STD, but there are other causes as well. If this diagnosis is suspected, I would suggest tests for STDs as well as a prostatic massage to evauate and culture the prostatic fluid.
There are also some non-infectious causes that can present with prostatitis-like syndromes - an example of this would be bladder
neckCervical spondylosis
Head and neck glands
Herpes zoster (shingles) on the neck and cheek
Irritated seborrheic kerotosis - neck
Lymph tissue in the head and neck.
Melanoma - neck
Neck lump
Neck pain
Neck pulse
Neck x-ray
Oral cancer obstruction.
Some cases of prostatitis requires an extended period of antibiotics (sometimes as long a 12 weeks). If antibiotics don't help, imaging of the prostate (i.e. a transrectal ultrasound) can be considered.
