Gary, When My husband got off work on Monday, he said he had been bleeding all day. He was worried enough to buy cranberry juice on the way home from work.(He hates cranberry juice). He also let me call his
doctor. They wanted him in right away. They did a urine ample to see if there was blood in the urine. (couldn't miss it it was completely red). They also did blood draws. They said he definatly had an infection because of the white blood cell count and precribed Bactrim. They sceduled him for an IVP test on Monday. Any ideas about how this test is performed? When I looked up his symtoms, everything is pointing to bladder cancer. Boy, do I hope I'm wrong!!! I did not tell him what I found and the
Doctor never brought it up either, but I could tell by how insistant they were about this test that they are concerned also. I'll let you know what happens.

Basically, they inject dye into a vein and track it (via x-ray) through the kidneys, bladder and connecting plumbing.  From what you describe it almost seems they think he has a kidney stone.  Let me know what happens; Good luck.

Hi, I'm writing in about my Fiance with a similar concern about "Blood In Urine", he discovered it only last night and we have made an appointment with a Specialist. My main worry is that his grandfather had Prostate Cancer and I understand that one of the early symptoms of Prostate Cancer is Hematuria (Blood in Urine)...Or it could just be a simple Urinary Tract Infection or Benign Prostate Enlargement(?)....What are his chances of getting Prostate Cancer and the cure? He is only 29 years old and is healthy, other than a brief episode of High Blood Pressure when he was 14.
Would appreciate a response. Thanks.

Dear Joyce,
You obviously have seen the answer for the first question regarding hematuria.  The causes are multiple, and one has to evaluate and diagnose the potential cause in the context of patients specific medical and family history.  In a 29 year old man, the likelihood of malignancy is much lower than in older men.  Eventhough prostate cancer can lead to blood in urine, it is not the most likely cause of hematuria, despite the positive family history.  You also should know that many men will have some focus of prostate cancer if they live long enough to reach their 70s and 80s.  I can not elaborate any more in your fiances case since I have no more specific history.  Regardless, however, hematuria in a 29 year old man needs to be investigated to find the cause.  I would suspect the most likely cause would be a benign condition.  An evaluation by a urologist is definitely recommended.
This information is provided for general medical educational purposes only.  Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition.  More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its satellites (1 800 653-6568).
Sincerely,
HFHS M.D.-BE
