Thanks for your questions.
Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited condition. Auto recessive polycystic disease presents in childhood and autosomal dominant presents in adulthood. Their is no therapy to reverse the disease to date because it has a genetic origin but ACE inhibitors and other medications can slow the progression of the renal failure. Multicystic kidney disease describes a kidney which does not develop properly and looks like a bunch of grapes. It usually shrinks up completely. This does not occur on both sides else the fetus would die before or shortly after birth.
I would recommend seeing a nephrologist for treatment.

If someone has cystic kidney diease and sufferes from a severe stroke or heart attack, will these cysts shorten the life of the renal system??. My mother had cystic kidney disease so severely that a cyst in her R kidney was bulging out in the abd cavity (???). THe upper collection system of the R kidney was "compromised". She had a brain stem bleed and the first system that failed was renal. Is this just normal in this type of fatal event, or could the cysts caused this to happen sooner than it would have without cystic kidney disease.
