: What is the difference between polycystic and multicystic kidney disease.   Is this inherited.    If so, how can I have it treated?
Thank you for your time.

Dear JWR
Thanks for your questions.
Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited condition.  Auto recessive polycystic disease presents in childhood and autosomal dominant presents in adulthood.   Their is no therapy to reverse the disease to date because it has a genetic origin but ACE inhibitors and other  medications can slow the progression of the renal failure.  Multicystic kidney disease describes  a kidney which does not develop properly and looks like a bunch of grapes.  It usually shrinks up completely.  This does not occur on both sides else the fetus would die before or  shortly after birth.
I would recommend seeing a nephrologist for treatment.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling  (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians notes and lab test results that you  may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
This information is provided for general medical education purposes only.  Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition.
Sincerely;
HFHS-M.D. MS

If someone has cystic kidney diease and sufferes from a severe stroke or heart attack, will these cysts shorten the life of the renal system??.   My mother had cystic kidney disease so severely that a cyst in her R kidney was bulging out in the abd cavity (???).  THe upper collection system of the R kidney was "compromised".     She had a brain stem bleed and the first system that failed was renal.  Is this just normal in this type of fatal event, or could the cysts caused this to happen sooner than it would have  without cystic kidney disease.
Thank you.
Again, any info received from this forum is for personal use only.   Would prolonged dependence on a ventilator prevent renal failure?     We adhered to her wishes not to be "artificially sustained", but I personally wonder how much time a vent would have added to her "existence".  .   Would this have prevented the renal failure and other multisystem deterioration.
You mentioned above that ACE inhibitors would slow the progression of this type of kidney disease.      How about the new ACE receptors?
Again, this  is for general med information only.  Thank you.
Thank you.
