My son is 8 years old. He complained about a month ago with pain in his lower left groin area, we wrote it off as a hard day of playing and continued on. Last week we took him rollerblading and when we returned home, he was in so much pain that he doubled over. We took him to the ER where we were told to see a an Uroligist to have an exam. The lab work is all negative, he feels great and did shortly after his 15 minute episode last week. The Dr. is guessing torsion and suggests that if it reocurs that we have surgery to correct. My question is what are the dangers if any are there to allow this to happen again? Is this a problem that fix its self or how often will it reocur.
Our 15 year old son also has testicle torsion.  See my entries and followup comments from December 28.  We are waiting to see a pediatric urologist.  If the pain returns, we are to take our son to the hospital immediately.  If it is waranted, they may have to do emergency surgery.  He has had a number of "episodes", one major one.  I don't think it is predictible when it will reoccur.  Our son had pain in July, again just before Christmas and once more 3 days later.  Since then, he has had no pain.  My understnading is that it can be very serious and requires immediate medical attention.  I have been looking for any information I can find regarding this situation and this forum has been the most useful so far.  I would be interested in hearing back from you for an update.  It can be scary, waiting and wondering when it will happen again.  I hope all goes well for your son.
This is an alarming condition ---I have recently been through it and lst a testicle.
If a torsion is suspected immediate surgery is mandatory.
In my case a doppler ultrasound was not done until 48hours after the torsion and then it was too late. I had developed gangrene and the testicle was removed.
Testicles that are in dannger of torsion can be fixed with stitches to stop it happening. Testicles that are likely to have a torsion often have a bell clapper deformity, literally hang down more than usual like a bell clapper.
Optimum time for operating is less than 8 hours after onset.
After this time the chance of saving it diminish.
For further information type torsion into yahoo.
Good luck.
