Reaction to Septra

by Lavela, Aug 13, 1998 12:00AM

While being treated for a urinary tract infection with Septra, I developed "serum sickness" like symptoms including arthralgia and mayalgia. The symptoms have persisted for almost one year. I am concerned about the prognosis. I have shown some improvement but also suffer severe recurrent episodes. I am interested in both my prognisis and where I might find documentation of othere cases.

Dear Lavella,
I looked in the Physician’s Desk Reference under the possible Adverse reactions or side effects of Septra and did find that “ serum sickness like syndrome” is listed.  The most common adverse side effects are gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, anorexia) and allergic (rash and itching). The company that makes the drug is Burroughs Wellcome, perhaps they have some information that they can give you.  They must have an account of at least one case or it would not be listed as a possible adverse reaction.
In terms of prognosis I am unable to help you since I don’t have a good account of you reaction to the medication nor have I encountered a patient with a similar occurrence in my career.  An infectious disease physician might have a chance of answering your question better than I can.
