Renal Cyst thrives despite 2 aspiration, with Alcohol

by bovi, Jul 02, 2008 07:14PM
In Jan. 2008 I was diagnosed with an AAA. The AAA was repaired (open surgery) in mid Jan, as a part of the repair an MRI was done and a 18cm complex cyst was found on my left kidney. The cyst was aspirated in late Feb. and 2.3 liters of fluid was removed. A follow up MRI in April showed that the cyst was getting larger again and a second aspiration was done, and 250 CCs of fluid was removed, in both aspirations alcohol was placed in the cyst.
In mid May an ultra sound was done and the cyst was growing again 5.5 CM. An MRI was done in mid June and the cyst is now 8.9 cm.
I am seeing a Urologist and she said that for a cyst > 4cm my kidney would need to be removed. A different Urologist in the same practice had wanted to remove the 18cm cyst at the same time I had the AAA repaired but the vascular surgeon said no.

My question is that the cyst has calcium and a bright efge but it is not cancerous. Would it be normal to remove the kidney or just the cyst. I am having back and side pain which is increasing as the cyst grows.

Hi,
You can read up a little about complex renal cysts at the link pasted below.

www.kidneycancerinstitute.com/kidney-cyst.html

Your cyst appears to fall under category III.

Removal of the cyst will be necessary as it is recurring despite repeated aspiration.

Removal of complete or part of a kidney will be decided based on the carcinogenic potential of the cyst.

Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.
