Self catheterising

I've been self catheterising for about four months now ( looks like it will be for life ) I just wonder if anyone out there has had any of the issues I'm having.

I have a lot of pain in my urethra . Not generaly during the procedure itself but seemingly randomly. The urologist just sort of shrugs when I tell him about it !

Also for the last couple of days I have passed a substance I can only describe as 'limscale' you know like what you find in the kettle , It was quite painful and I wonder if anyone has ever heard of this before ?

Hi 1Twinkles1, welcome to the Urogynecology community!

This is a question for urology (this forum specializes in pelvic organ prolapse) so I'm going to contact administration and have them foward your post on to them.

Good luck!

What is the root cause of you having to self-cath?

Hi sparky2call

I have an Atonic bladder. I'm unable to void at all without using a catheter.

Hi, I too self cath but currently have a suprapubic catheter due to a fistula.
I too have had pain as a result of the self catheterization. At times I have had a scaly type substance in my urine. This was really effident from the collection bag's tubing.
Currently I have had this really bad and have seen my doctor for this. After a urine culture was taken it was discovered that I have a UTI again.
It could be possible that you might have a UTI as well.

For the pain or discomfort of the urethra you could ask of the following, Xylocain jelly 2% or 5% cream. For any possible bladder spasms you could ask for Buscopan. Due to other neurological and urological problems I use Morphine for pain.

I hope that you will be able to get some relief, as I know how it can wear you down.

All the best.

Ron

Thank you Ron , I will ask about the things you suggest.
It's good to know I'm not alone.
