Semen after Vasectomy

by Marjorie__0, Jun 13, 1998 12:00AM

My husband and I are considering a vasectomy.  Most things you read say the man's sexual function and semen remain unchanged following vasectomy, however we have come across two references that say a vasectomized man's semen gets progressively thicker over the years until it is the consistency of toothpaste.  Is this so and why would that be?  I don't think we would want to do it in that case.  Thank you.

Dear Marjorie
Thanks for your questions.
First of all I don’t think the references are valid. . Normal ejaculate volumes range between 2 and 5 cc’s.  Sperm only represent a small fraction of the ejaculate. Seminal vesicles, cowpers glands and urethral glands all contribute to the ejaculate. These glands are not affected after a vasectomy.  I am curious if your reference are from reputable sources.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling  (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians’ notes and lab test results that you  may be able to obtain. These will help us greatly.
