Sharp bladder pain and urinary urgency

Hi,

I'm a 21 year old female and i've had problems with urinary incontinence since i was quite young. Over the past 18 months i've had a real problem with urinary urgency...when i need to urinate its like someone has flicked a switch; i go from not needing the toilet at all to having such a sense of urgency that its actually painful within minutes and i must get to a toilet there and then.
Also, for the past 2 months i've been experiencing a sharp pain in my bladder...sometimes it feels like a sharp scratching and at others its a radiating ache from my bladder to my genital area. I have been to see a doctor about this and was told that my urine was fine etc and then a couple of weeks later i was told that i now had a urine infection as i had protein in my urine so i've taken antibiotics for the infection but the symptoms are still there.

I am really worried about this now...had anyone else had these symptoms?? Any ideas about what to do next?

Lizzie

Hi there. I would suggest that you get hold of a uro-gynae to check if the bladder problem has got to do with tipped uterus or other issues linked.

I FEEL THAT SHARP SCRATCHING TOO.... It's so annoying. Sometimes it is so sudden and shocking and it gives me goosebumps... urgh.

I am experiencing clawing pain in my bladder for 2 years+ already. Mine started when I pee'ed blood one morning because of an infection. I was rushed to the hospital because it was so painful to pee (burning feeling) and the docs gave me antibiotics. But ever since, there has been this weird, scratching (sometimes clawing, like a needle running through the walls of my bladder) especially at night... I have visited a urogynae and he did cystoscope and saw that my bladder wall has many blood points, and an ulcer. Not sure how these appeared but i think it was because i have always drank very little water and held my pee longer than i should.

Now that I am officially diagnosed with IC, Ive no idea how to get rid of it. Tried acupuncture and it was so painful during the treatment that i developed a fear towards the whole treatment. Eating cranberries didnt seem to help either. (i think it worsened my symptoms)
Now im trying out alkaline water in my diet to see how it helps to reduce the irritation but so far no improvements.

anyone with any success with this scratching pain? I would love to try any remedies... It's been affecting me a lot.

Hi Ellinette!

I know this is an old thread, but I have to ask if you still have the scratching sensations up to this day. It's killing me, I swear. I have this sensation whenever i move, I walk, I lift my left leg, when I sleep and turn from one side to another or just randomly when I'm just sitting or whatever. Most times it's a little bit on the left side of the bladder. The scratching gets better when the bladder is a little fuller but then I have to go immediately to the bathroom, so I have the urgency also. After I empty the bladder and I get up, the scratching makes me want to pee again. I don't know what to do anymore.. I have this for four years but it was a mild feeling before, then two months ago I pee'ed blood two times in a week and then these symptoms got worse. It's like a knife going through my bladder wall, so sudden that freaks me out! In these four years I had a few months with no symptoms at all.. did 9 ultrasounds and I have scheduled an MRI soon.
I hope you will see this comment, if you do please let me know how you're feeling now.
I'm crying everyday, can't go to work anymore..starting to have depression because of this.
Thanks
Hi Catdeluxe! I’m so sorry you are feeling the pain Everyday. It must be very exhausting and uncomfortable. My symptoms never went away since 2011 Feb :( however, it did improve over the years. I have not peed blood since. But I did have a couple of Uti which needed normal anti biotics treatment but nothing too serious. I know it is very frustrating and your symptoms sound very very similar to mine. Nothing really helped except to drink enough water and even so, I still get the scratching feeling today.

What helped me a lot was not to hold my pee, as I tend to get uti if I do that especially at night. Also, I’m currently pregnant and the scratching feeling is worse than normal: so I have a hunch that it is because of pressure or weaker muscles in the pelvic region that is pressing on some nerves, resulting in electrical signals going crazy at the bladder area. Sometimes do you feel that the scratching feeling is like an electric current going through your bladder wall? Since there are no physical problems (like infection or stones), I would think it could be nerve related. I wish I have a solution for you but I currently don’t... you can try doing kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles and hopefully it will help to relieve the scratching feeling. I hope it gets better for you!
Oh my, I'm so glad you saw my comment! It is indeed like an electric current, like a spasm cause by a knife that scratches the bladder. I had this before but it was mild at first, i was feeling this once in a while or for a short period of time and then it would go away. Now it hurts three times more, sometimes I feel like my bladder is swollen and it s going to crack! :( im super afraid to do a cistoscopy I ve heard is very unpleasant and might be worse a few weeks after. But im also stressed out everyday not knowing what the problem is.. can you go to work? I cant concentrate at all when the pain starts, when i have a flare. Also.. does it also happen to you when you do certain movements? I get this when i walk, lift my left leg, when i sit in the car or just on a chair, even when i use a towel in that area after the shower. And sometimes it s just random... but it s daily and at night it gets worse (before going to bed). The strange thing is that I can sleep fine, I go once or twice to the bathroom but other than that my sleep is pretty deep. Then in the morning it starts all over again. The stabbing sensation is the worst that I ever felt I swear. Did you check if you have Ureaplasma? I tested positive, but doctors consider it s normal in a certain quantity. Now I dont know about that, it s a pathogen that s really hard to kill, can cause lots of damage especially to pregnant women but also UTI sensations to everyone else. For others (most people) it s asymptomatic.. i took an antibiotic for it but i still have the sensation so Im not sure it s that. :(
Also, congrats for your pregnancy! I am so caught up in this thing, I forgot to tell you this! How lovely you will have a baby ❤️, I want a baby too in the future, im almost 27..

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Frequent urination in adults can be due to many causes .The primary cause which needs to be excluded is diabetes.D iabetes not only causes frequent urination but also numbness and tingling sensations. I would advise you to get a fasting blood sugar and Hb A1 C test done. If dibetes is ruled out then other possibilities which need to be ruled out are interstitial cystitis, overactive bladder syndrome, stroke and other neurological diseases, urinary incontinence, bladder cancer(rare) and bladder dysfunction .Please consult a urologist in that case.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
