Smoking related to bladder tumors

by Jo-An-Bentley, Dec 29, 1998 12:00AM
My Mom has been having blood in her urine.  She went to a Urologist concerning this problem. The Urologist is going to check her bladder.  He mentioned to us that since my Mom was a smoker there was a possibility of bladder cancer, he said that smoking was more related to bladder cancer than lung cancer.  What is your feeling on this?

Dear Jo-Ann,
Cigarette smokers have up to a four times higher incidence of bladder cancer than non smokers. The risk correlates with the number of cigarettes smoked, the duration of smoking, and the degree of inhalation.  The risks has been observed in both sexes.  Former smokers have a somewhat reduced incidence of bladder cancer compared to active smokers.  It is said to take a cessation of 20 years to approach levels of non smokers.
I agree with your Urologist.  Your mother needs a full work-up for hematuria.(IVP,UA,Cystoscopy, and Cytology)
