TESTICLE CYSTS OR NOT ?

by TRAVEL BUG, May 06, 2007 12:00AM
ON 20/02 I WENT TO MY GP FOR A LUMP I FOUND ON MY LEFT TESTICLE. HE DECIDED IT WAS A CYST OR AN INFECTION (SOFT AND MOVEABLE). THE CYST HAS SORT OF GONE BUT I AM LEFT WITH A LOT OF PAIN. IVE HAD A BLOOD TEST (FOR INFECTIONS AND CANCER), AN ULTRA SOUND AND HAVE BEEN TO 2 SPECIALISTS AND HAVE BEEN ON 3 COURSES OF ANTIBIOTICS (THE LAST LOT A 15 DAY COURSE). DAILY I HAVE A LUMP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TESTICLE WHICH COMES AND GOES. ONE SPECIALIST SAYS HE CANT FIND ANYTHING WRONG (THE LUMP WAS NOT UP WHEN I WENT) AND THE SECOND SPECIALIST SAYS HE WANTS TO OPERATE TO REMOVE IT. THE HARD LUMP WHEN UP, FEELS LIKE IT IS A VEIN OF SORTS. I CAN ALSO FEEL THE TUBES BEHIND THE TESTICLE ARE ALSO BIGGER THAN THOSE ON THE RIGHT. I AM IN CONSTANT PAIN, ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES SEEM TO HELP. IT IS NOW THE 6/05, AND IS NOW EFFECTING BOTH MY MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELL BEING. I'M VERY DEPRESSED AND PUTTING ON WIEGHT DUE TO INACTIVITY DUE TO THE PAIN. ANY IDEAS WHAT IT COULD BE?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

There are many causes that can lead to a testicular lump, including a cyst, hydrocele, varicocele, infection or cancer.

Imaging the lump should be considered to narrow the differential.  An ultrasound would be a reasonable first step.

I would also obtain urine tests to rule out infection, and obtain a prostatic massage or transrectal ultrasound to evaluate for prostate infection.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician, or in conjunction with a urologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
