Testosterone Injections and Impotence

I am currently being treated by a urologist for low levels of male hormone (hypogonadism).  Currently, I am receiving injections of testosterone at the rate of 400/mlgs. every three weeks.  The only test my doctor has ever done was to check the testosterone blood levels.  He never checked out any of the other components of the hypothalamus-->pituitary-->testicle  axis, claiming it was "too expensive."  I am especially concerned at this point because although I received 400/mlgs. three days ago, I have absolutely no sexual desire and experienced sexual failure with my wife--who has been very understanding by the way--this evening.  How can this be?  It seems as if my body simply consumes testosterone.  I know my levels are low now regardless of the recent injection as I have "hot flashes," a typical sign for me.  I heard some cancerous tumors produce an estrogen like substance which could explain my bodies "consumption" of testosterone.  Do I need to have further tests done?

Dear Keith
Thanks for your questions.
I agree with Doug you do need hormone levels drawn.  Testosterone, estrogen, TSH and  prolactin are often included.  Testosterone levels have been used by some urologist to guide dosing of future testosterone injections.
When you get your hormone levels back, if only the testosterone level is low or normal I would continue to see your urologist for supplements.  He may decide to increase the dosage.  If the other level are abnormal he may then refer you to an endocrinologist. Estrogen tumors present in the male with breast enlargement and usually a testicular lump.  They do not consume testosterone although a small amount of testosterone can be turned into estrogen in the adipose tissue ( fat).
More individualized urological and endocrine care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its urban campuses by calling  (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians
