Herpes can be diagnosed conclusively on a blood test. Herpes infection is lifelong and is characterized by periods of activation and remissions.
The pain and lymph node enlargement could be related to the herpes outbreak as herpes causes pain along the affected nerve roots. HSV2 infections usually affect the genital area while HSV1 affects the face and lip area. Both infections can be spread sexually.
The effects of herpes can last for a couple of weeks though the urethral pain should have subsided. Itchy urethra can be a sign of a UTI or a trichomonas infection, again transmitted sexually, and needs treatment with metronidazole (Flagyl).
Infection and type of treatment will depend on organism identified.
Ensure that you keep your fluid intake over 2000 ml per day and avoid irritants such as caffeine and alcohol. Adding citrus fruits and juices to diet can also wash out any existing infection as it acidifies the urine and helps in flushing the bacteria out of the urinary tract.
Thanks DR. I will try o get seen sooner hopefully. Do you think I should go into my family doctor beforehand because the painful nodes and itchy urethra, or just wait it out? Also Do you think a initial Herpes OB would last this long? Thanks
