UTI in 3 year old girl

History: At 4 mos old, our daughter was diagnosed with a duplicate renal system on her left side, after finding out that she had a UTI. For the next 4 mos, she went through various tests before they did surgery on her before she was 9 mos old. She had 2 different surgeries - 1 to cut open the ureterocele, 2 to remove her duplicate kidney and ureter. She was on nitrofuratin until she was 14 mos old. Now she is almost 3, and has another UTI, this time on her right side. Her wbc is extremely high, and her fever has been up to 103.7. They have given us septra for her as the antibiotic.
My question is this: All that they are telling us to do, is to follow up with her urologist, and do a follow-up with GP in 10 days. Should we ask her urologist for a VCUG, or any other test? Or what should our next course of action be? Is there any way to prevent this from happening in the future? Is this going to be a recurring thing that we have to start looking for?

Yes, a VCUG should certainly be considered. All children under the age of 7 with a UTI should be evaluated for vesicoureteral reflux, since this can cause kidney damage and scarring.
If reflex is present, surgery or medical options can be considered and should be discussed with your urologist. Medical treatment normally consists of daily antimicrobial therapy.
I would discuss a VCUG with your urologist, or obtain another opinion.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.
