Ureter reimplantation surgery

by EHouston, Sep 17, 2006 12:00AM
I have a 2 yr old daughter. She was born with severe reflux. She has had DEFLUX twice and both times have improved her condition, but have not 100% corrected it. She has had no infections and she has been on antibiotics since the day she was born. She has NO symptoms and is otherwise perfectly healthy. She has no difficulty urinating etc..
They want to do surgery now to permanently fix her reflux. Basically, can someone please tell me what I can expect with this surgery? Recovery time? and overall success rate etc?? I appreciate it. It is hard to operate on a child who is symptomless and healthy.  Elaine

The success rate for surgery ranges from 50 to 80 percent.  It will go down if the reflux is more severe (50 percent in Grade V cases to 80 percent in Grade I cases).

There are no clear guidelines pointing to a preference of medical versus surgical therapy.

If there is concern about the treatment course, I would suggest a referral to a second urology opinion - preferably at a major academic medical center.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
