Urninary Tract Infection--Enlarged Prostate

My PSA readings have been abnormally high for the past 3 years.
Highest reading this year is 14.8. I have been seeing my uroligist for biopsies and, so far, no indication of cancer. My
doctor tells me these high readings are due to an enlarged
prostate. He has not at this point in time recommended surgery.
On September 2, 2003 I came down with a urinary tract infection.
I was rushed to an ER where a catheter was inserted for immediate relief. Lab reports indicated a bacterial or protozoan as cause of infection. I was given sulfamethoxazole with tri-
methroprim twice daily for 10 days. The catheter was removed in
3 days. My concern is this: I was on vacation at that time.
I was intimate with a friend who, unfortunately, is HIV pos.
This drug also treats respiratory tract infections such as
pneumocystis pneumonia. I know my friend has a cough which is
frequent. I do make a practice of safe sex. But, could it be
possible that I picked up my urinary tract infection from him.
If this is possible what should I do? What should I tell my
friend? What should I tell my doctor?

If you were using any type of barrier protection (i.e. condoms all the time), then picking up the UTI from intimate contact is unlikely. The chances of picking up the UTI increases if the is a lapse in condom use.
With any intimate contact with HIV, I would suggest that you get tested for HIV. If PCP is a consideration, your friend can be tested for it using an induced sputum test.
If you are immunocompetent (i.e. HIV test is negative), then you should not be susceptible to any more bugs than an average person. If not already done, I would be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea. If there continues to be symptoms, a transrectal ultrasound can be considered to evaluate for any prostate abscesses.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.
