Worrying about Epididymitis (no STDs)

Hi,
im 19 years and this is my first post on this website but i was hoping to get some answers for this problem i am having.  

about 3 weeks ago i awoke with a very minor right testicle ache, just enough to worry.  I thought i might have mashed them in my sleep so i tried to not think about it. the next mourning i woke up it was gone and i was relieved, however later that evening it began to rear its ugly head again, still not very painful just a dull ache but i was concered so the next mourning i went to see my family doc and he inspected them and found nothing wrong other than a mild tenderness i felt. He also tested my urine and tested for stds, urine came back with a mild infection although he never told me what caused it (i dont even know if he knew)  and stds came back all negative. So he said i prolly had epididymitis and sent me on my way with 2 doses a day of 100mg of doxycycline for 10 days. symptoms worsened before they improved however in about 5 days the ache had dissapeared although there was still tenderness and scrotum was still red when they were bumb or just sitting in a bad position. going in for the follow up i told him about the tenderness and that i also had an occasion pain the seemed to run up the spermatic cord into my groin. he gave me this time 500mg cipro for 5 days to make sure infection was gone (oh and he tested my urine again and found no trace of infection).

i am now on the 2nd day of cipro and im just a little worried that these symptoms are still here even if they are better. like i said earlier these are my symptoms im still having

-red scrotum (although not hard or thick)
-no more dull ache but still discomfort and tenderness at times
-sometimes there is a pain that seems to run up the spermatic cord into the lower groin
-no burning urination or pain ejaculating
-sometimes i get a twinge in my left one as well
-no stds but i have had sex with only my girlfriend

so my question is how long will the discomfort last and is it common for it to still persist after 3 weeks? can i expect this to be the worst of it or will it worsen? i was told that it takes time for the swelling to go down at that it can account for all my symptoms but i have also heard that alot of men seem to be completely fine after a week of treatment. so which is it and does anyone have any experience or insight that would help calm my nerves???
