There are many reasons for blood in the urine.  The causes vary with age with the most common being inflammation or infection of the prostate or bladder, stones, and, in older patients, malignancy or benign prostatic hyperplasia.  Normally this is worked up with a urinalysis, urine cytology and a cystoscopy (a scope that is used to look up the bladder.

There are several kidney disorders that can cause this as well - they can include stones, or glomerular disease.  A spiral CT scan to look for stones and renal ultrasound can be considered to evaluate the kidney.

Depending on where the cyst is and what kind of surgery is being considered would determine how long the hospital stay is.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
