i know blood values vary from lab to lab, but was is the norm for bicarbonate. i was one # below the labs reading. all my other tests were nornmal, for kidney, liver, etc...my family dr said not to worry. i read bicarbonate directly affects ur kidneys. what direction is usually taken to correct this? i do not have diabetes, nor do i have diahreha, vomiting, nor did i ingest any toxins? what auto immune diseases cause this?

Typically, bicarbonate ranges from 22-26 mEq/L. If the low bicarbonate is caused by the kidneys (i.e. via renal tubular acidosis), then bicarbonate supplementation can be considered.
Keep in mind that diseases other than the kidney can cause changes in the bicarbonate level. I am unaware of specific autoimmune disorders that can cause a low bicarbonate.
Further evaluation of a low bicarbonate level can be done via a kidney specialist if this continues to be of concern.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.
