Dear Berry,
Curvature of the penis is called Peyronie’s disease. This condition is thought to be doe to fibrosis ( thickening) of the outer covering of the penis called the tunica albiguinea. In some cases the curvature is the result of a previous injury to the penis with subsequent scarring. Most often, no cause can be found.  Curvature of the penis alone is not harmful. Treatment is required only if the curvature is severe enough to cause difficulty with vaginal penetration or if it causes pain with erection.  Spontaneous resolution of the problem may occur.
Several treatment options exist. A non-surgical option is injection of the thickened area of the tunica albiguinea with a steroid solution.  Success rates vary from 20 to 30 %.  If surgery is required, an incision is made similar to a circumcision .  The plaque-like thickening of the tunica albiguinea is removed and the penis is straightened. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only.  Please consult your physician for diagnostic and treatment options pertaining to your specific medical condition. More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its satellites (1 800 653 6568).
