cystocele

by Pat__0__0, Oct 05, 1998 12:00AM

I am a 36 year old woman who recently had 2 children.  After giving
birth to the first, I began to notice a swelling in my vagina.  I
have had problems with sensory urgency--feeling the need to urinate
when standing or exercising.  I have no pain from the vaginal swelling,
but wonder if this is the cause of my urgency?  I have seen a
gyneocologist who did urodynamic testing and determined that I have
sensory urgency and a cystocele, and recommended surgerical bladder repair
  and a hysterectomy.  I would
like a second opinion, especially as to the need for a hysterectomy.
Would a urologist, or a gyneocologist specializing in urinary
problems be the best person to see?

Dear Lisa,
This is an area where gynecology and urology both have involvement. My feeling (prejudice?) is that a urologist with a subspecialisation in female urology would be the proper individual to see for a second opinion. Most urology training programs have such individuals.
