: Two questions:
  1. What kind of lab test tells me how high my sperm count is and what is considered normal?
  2. My girlfriend was diagnosed with hpv. This showed up on a pap test 2 years prior to her ever having intercourse.
After we started having intercourse, she developed a fungus infection and hpv then became an
issue to the doctor and her. How do I know if I have contracted hpv? I show no signs.
From the viewpoint of each of us, how safe or unsafe is oral sex?

Dear Gregorio
Thank you for your questions.
The standard semen analysis will determine the amount of the ejaculate (1.5-5.0 cc), number of sperm per milliliter(> 20 million),  the percentage of motile sperm(> 50%), the type of motility and the percent of sperm with normal shape( > 50%)as well as other parameters. The reliablity of the results is quite laboratory dependent.  This test is used for the work-up of infertility.
HIV is a virus which is to small to see under a microscope.  The cells of the cervix  (mouth of the womb), when infected by this virus, do show some characteristic changes that can be seen microscopically.    HIV is a very commonly sexually transmitted.  There are different strains of the virus which cause venereal warts and others can increase the chances of cervical and penile cancer.  The warts have a characteristic appearance but are difficult to find in the male. They even maybe in the urethra.  Doctors use 4-5% acetic acid, (vinegar), on the skin and cervix to demonstrate the lesions for surgical or topical treatment.  Topical medications, laser, cauterization and freezing therapies are employed as treatment. No treatment has truly been shown to be superior to the others.  These condyloma are difficult to treat because they are hard to find and are usually in more than one place. The best form of management is to treat visible lesions and in the case of women, perform routine  pap smears( for early detection of cervical cancer). As far as oral sex, the virus can infect areas of the body with the same cell type as the genitals. The oral cavity lining as a site of occurrence is rare.
Hope this has helped.
