my son is 2 weeks old and has hypospadia/chordee. they urologist said its a mild case. i've never had a child have to have sugury let alone anethesa. i'm very nervous. we need to wait til he's 10 months. my concern is the anethesa affect on my son and the affects on him afterward. will he be able to have children , will he be able to have an errection. how common is this procedure.we are using rochester strong memorial hospital and a urologist named dr. mevorach. if you can give me any insight on them that would be great too. thank you , i ho0pe you can ease my mind.

Hello - thanks for asking you question.

Surgery for hypospadias is normally performed between 6 months and 2 years.  Complications of untreated hypospadias include urinary tract obstruction leading the increased rates of infection.  

If properly treated, there should be no effect on fertility or erections, but you should discuss your concerns with your personal urologist.  

I do not know Dr. Mevorach, but Strong Memorial in Rochester, NY is a fine institution with a good reputation - I am sure that the pediatric urologists there have the necessary experience in these cases.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
