Most are used in a situation where you can't empty your bladder on your own. Other reaseons might be surgical repair of a condition, damage to the urethra, stricts etc.
I'm not sure if this answers your question. I have been scheduled for a retrograde urethrogram and a cystoscopy. I currently have had a 20 Fr. for over the last 6 months. I don't know if a decision on a repair will be discussed today. I expect that I will leave with a different catheter again. I'm not quite sure if the will increase the size again but imagine that they will.
What is your need of a catheter for?

As strange as it might sound, it is actually easier to insert a larger gage catheter. Also a larger catheter might provent leakage inbetween the catheter and urethra.
