I was amazed that this was the first post I found when I did a search for Kidney stent. I am not sure of the exact name of the procedure I had, but it wasn't lithotripsy. I had a 5mm by 9mm kidney stone removed today at 2:30 p.m. My doctor, whom I trust completely, went in via my urethra and broke up the stone and then inserted a stent. I had an IV and was under general anesthesia. I walked out of the surgery center at 4:00 p.m.  My husband had to stop 4 times on our 50 min drive home so that I could run into a bathroom and urinate blood. The pain associated with urination took my breath away. It is now 3:50 am and I have not slept more than 15 minutes at a time. When I first got home, I sat on the toliet for about 2 hours straight. I have been in a recliner in the living room, but getting up to urinate every 30 minutes. Still the same pain, and still blood. I am taking pain killers an average of every 2.5 hours. I called the doctor about 8pm tonight and was told this was okay to get me through the first 24 hours.  I feel like I should be in the hospital with a catheter and IV pain medication. At least I would be able to get some rest. I actually planned on going back to work the next day! (but called them on the way home from surgery and told them I wouldn't be back until tomorrow)  I have been hit with some heavy medical problems in the past 5 months. I had the kidney stone for 3 months and didn't do anything before now because the pain would come and go and I had another emergency surgery to deal with in March. The stone had dropped down to where it was right at the bladder, but not in the bladder. My doctor told my husband after surgery it was "wedged in there pretty good". So I don't think I would have passed it on my own any time soon.
I am not sure if there is a question in this post but I felt like I had to post after reading your response about staying 1 or 2 days in the hospital.  I feel like the insurance companies are managing our health care and not our doctors. I really don't know of anything short of a major heart attack or stroke that will buy you an overnight stay in a hospital anymore. EVERYTHING is outpatient,  On March 24th this year I had emergency surgery to repair a tear in my retina. Long story there, but I checked in at 6am and left the hospital at 11:00am that morning,
I guess I did have a couple of questions. Is there anything I/we can do as patients who pay good money for good insurance to be able to stay overnight at a hospital after surgery?  Is the frequent urination and severe pain normal this many hours after surgery? To his credit, my doctor told me on the phone tonight to call him any time or go to the emergency room if I felt like it was necessary. I have also in the past 4 hours lost control of my bladder. I feel the sensation to urinate and when I stand up I have to literally run to the bathroom and sometimes am not making it without dripping on the floor.

Hi,
      Thanks for writing in. Ureteral stenting is done primarily to allow the flow of urine from the kidney through the ureter to the bladder. Placement of stent is usually done along with lithotripsy or nephrolithotomy as a treatment for removal of stones.

If this procedure is also planned along with stenting then a two days stay is required. If it is only stenting then a single day stay at the hospital is required.
