lump on testicle and testicle becoming smaller

I am 35, excellent health, but have had a painful area on my right testicle for several months.
There is a small hard lump, nodule perhaps 1/2 the size of a pea, that seems to be near the epidydimis.
It is painful to touch.  The testicle also is only about half the size of my other testicle.
They used to be the same size. I will be seeing a physician next week, but wondered if anyone
could provide some help on what it might be.

Any time a man, especially one as young as you, finds a testicular mass it is best evaluated by a physician, preferably a urologist.  As a general rule, a mass involving the epididymis tends to be benign more often, and a mass involving the testicle is more likely malignant until proven otherwise. The location and the fact that you have pain also is more indicative of  a benign and inflammatory or infectious process. Although, malignant testicular masses could be painful too.
At any rate, there is a higher incidence of testicular cancer in men between ages of 20 to 40. It is a curable cancer when caught early.  It is best that you see your doctor as soon as possible.
