============================
Dear Colleen
Thanks for your questions.
A UTI work-up is the same for bladder cancer.
An IVP ( kidney dye Xray test) and cystoscopy ( look into the bladder with a lighted telescope)  identifies stones, tumors, a poorly emptying bladder, outpouchings of the bladder ( diverticulae) which don’t drain well or a connect between the bowel and bladder.   Finding of interstitial cystitis could also be seen.  If  no  abnormalities are found  and infections are not associated with sexual intercourse.  chronic suppressive antibiotics are usually started. Also  urinary incontinence and constipation can be controlled medically.   This usually breaks the cycle of infections and a trial off antibiotics can be attempted at about 6 months.
Good Luck!
