post operative problems

My husband had his prostrate taken out and had a catheter in for 3 weeks and when removed he could not urinate because of scar tissue and severe pain. They putin another catheter and had it in 4 weeks and when taken out he still has severe pain in the head of his penis and can only dribble and uses his side catheter during the day and night. What can be medically done about this?

Excluding any infection should be considered, this can lead to a neurogenic bladder.  Infection can also lead to pain at the head of the penis as well.  A urinalysis would be an appropriate test to evaluate for this possibility - if positive, a urine culture would have to be performed.

If this is negative, you can consider cystoscopy to evaluate for any anatomical abnormalities or blockages that can lead to the symptoms.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or urologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
