prostatitis/balanitis

by Lawrie, Jan 15, 2004 12:00AM
I am a 61 year old male, married 24 years.I saw my uroligst recently who advised I had prosatitis after a family dr. rectal exam. I am on 4 weeks doxycylene./He said I may have mild epidymitis as well as scrotum is red and tingling. My kidneys were having some aching as well as back pain and some low grade fever.I had recurrent balanitis for which I had a circumcision 5 years ago  by this uroligist but still comes back sometimes ,I am using hydorcortisone cream as given by my urologist.I have tingling like pins and needles in the inner thighs. My family Dr wants a std test but have not had that in 26 years ,they were ok as were two before .I have only had sexual intercourse  with my wife in the 26 years/
Is the balanitis and prosatitis connected ,why the tingling in thighs. I had cystcostopy which was ok and renal exam which I am awaiting result .
  concerned.

I am not aware of a clear association between balanitis and prostatitis.

Prostatitis itself can cause a tingling sensation.  You may want to consider further evaluation of the prostatic secretions via the digital rectal exam.  If the antibiotics are not helping the symptoms, a transrectal ultrasound can be considered to evaluate for any abscess.  A scrotal ultrasound can also be considered to evaluate for epididymitis which may be causing your symptoms.

For the balanitis, an antifungal cream such as Lotrimin can be tried if the hydrocortisone cream isn't working.

I agree with the suggestion of an STD test, even though the risk of this is low.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
