removal of kidney

my son is 24 and has to have his left kidney removed. we only discovered recently that he was born with this. his kidney is enlarged and only working a very minor persentage. he has trouble passing urine. my concern is that as a young lad he likes to socialise at the weekends and im wondering when he gets this removal done would he damage his other kidney with alcohol
