self-cath

I am forced to use a catheter at all times to urinate.  I use soap and water, as recommended by my physician.  It's very awkward at times, and there are infections, but I manage.  My question: Can I use handi-wipes or the the new waterless, anti-bacterial soaps to clean the catheter in situations where water is not available?  Will those cleaners do damage over time to my urethra?

Dear Tommy R.
Clean intermittant self catheterization is a safe and effective way to empty the bladder for certain conditions causing impaired bladder emptying.  The technique is a "clean" one, and not a "sterile" one.  It is recommended to change catheters at least once a month, or sooner if the catheter shows signs of damage or cannot be adequately cleaned.  It is recommended to clean it with a mild soap (not antibacterial) and to rinse it well.  When storing a catheter between uses it should be allowed to completely dry to help prevent bacterial growth on the catheter.
More individualized care is available at the Henry Ford Hospital and its suburban campuses at  (1 800 653 6568). We can also arrange local accommodations through this number if this is your need. Please bring any physicians
