semen blood

Recently I have noticed traces of blood in semen; today my wife and I were intimate and it was completely dark red and looked almost "paint-like".  I am in late 50's and have high blood pressure and type two diabetic; I have a physical every year and this year (9 months ago) had a colonsocopy.  My doctor (VA Hospital) suggested it, because I had never had one.  Everything was okay.  The only thing I do different now is: 1-the VA put me on a new med about a month ago called Gemfibrozil.  2- my job changed and now I sit at a desk all day and before I was on the move and rarely sat down.  3- I have been under a lot of stress in the last few months.  There is no pain or swelling that I am aware of; I do have erectile dysfunction somewhat, but my wife and I attribute that to age and the diabetes.  Is this common?  I have noticed a trace of blood in the last month or so in my semen, but just figured it was do to stress or the "new position" of sitting on my prostrate for most of the day.  Any ideas?

No, jcur, as far as I know there aren't any doctors responding to the posts.  There are some "Ask a Doctor/Expert" forums, but when I tried posting a question it said that it costs 16$!!  Bull.  16$ isn't worth a halfbaked answer from someone who hasn't examined you, and says not to listen to his advice anyways.  Plus I don't want to give them a credit card number.

On the upside, there are some people with decent knowledge who answer posts - "tlh" has some educated answers and often recommends sites.  Sometimes I've read posts from nurses, which are the next best thing.

I have some news for you:

Apparently blood in semen is called "Hermatospermia."  The most common cause is inflammation of the seminal vescicles or, as you rightly suspected, the prostate gland.  So there we have it.  Go see your Doctor, sir.

You probably know more about this than I do, judging from your visits to the doctor n that, but my guess is that this is not normal and you should see your doctor about it soon.  Also, try not to get stressed so much, stay happy (easy to say, I know), and maybe go for a little walk every now and then at work, or sit on a cushion?  Sorry I can't be more help, but without trying to alarm you, I think that this is Not Normal.  I've heard about "blood in the semen" somewhere on the net, but I can't remember where.  I'll go check it out, and if I find anything I'll post it, if only to "respect my elders."
