spot on head of penis

by oliverdaisy, Dec 11, 2008 03:52AM
I didn't exactly know where to post this... my apologies.

I am 18 years old and I have had fordyce spots along the shaft of my penis for the past few years ever since I began puberty. I have very little reason to believe I could contracted a sexually transmitted disease, recently I noticed a small red spot on the head my penis. Looking at it from afar it looks like a spot; slightly redish in tone of my normal penis head color. There is only one spot and it is on the head of my penis, extremely close I can almost describe it like an fordyce spot except its not white and it's slightly redish.

I am planning on going to a clinic to get tested for STD's but I'd like any extra input, as to what it may be, thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. When spots, lumps or rashes appear on the penis one of the first concerns many men have is whether they have a sexually transmitted disease. In most cases most spots are both common and harmless. It is the size, shape and color of the spot that helps to determine whether there is something to be concerned about.
There are few condition about which we can discuss based on description you have given. They are Fordyce spots, balanitis and psoriasis.
Balanitis is an inflammation that affects the head of the penis and/or the foreskin. Balanitis is characterized by shiny red to orange plaque (area). It can also present as a yellow hue with red pinpoint spotting. Infections, poor hygiene, chemical irritants can cause this condition.

Fordyce spots presents as small red or purple spots on the penis can appear on the glans, shaft or scrotum and usually affect younger men. Known as Fordyce spots they may appear in one's or two's but they frequently occur in patches of up to 100. These spots come about as a result of dilated blood vessels. They can look a little unsightly but they are completely harmless.

Psoriasis is a skin disorder that affects about 1 in every 50 men. There are various types of psoriasis but the most common is known as plaque psoriasis. Skin cells are normally replaced over 28 days, but in psoriasis the process is more rapid and takes just four days. These new skin cells form a raised red rash and thick dry patches called plaques. If scratched the area bleeds in a characteristic pin-head manner.
If the spot on your penis is not painful, then I don’t think you need to worry. Consult a urologist for further assistance.
