i'm male, just about to hit 40 and a few weeks back had my 1st (and hopefully last!) UTI. antibiotics cured that side of things however was referred by my GP to hospital for tests, i've had a US Scan, Cystocopy and Urine Flow Test. luckily nothing nasty lurking but they noticed my bladder isn't emptying properly and diagnosed that as the cause of my UTI. i think the consultant advised that my prostate itself is okay but the sphincter muscle that regulates urine flow from bladder is too tense/tight i.e. my urine flow readout was an almost perfect smooth semi circle of a line (zero reaching a high point then down to zero again) instead of a sudden spike and rapid drop, which consultant advised it would have been had my urine flow been normal. he advised it might have been like this for all/most of my life.
so, i've been prescribed tamsulosin to relax aforementioned muscle, a 3 month course and then he wants to review me, assuming it's doing the trick i'll be on them for life, 1 per day. that in itself (i.e. taking a tablet daily for life) doesn't necessarily bother me however some of the tamsulosin side effects do. my understanding is many of these diminish over the weeks/months but that some of the 'big hitters' don't diminish e.g. retrograde ejaculation and risk of erections that remain after 4+ hours, erections at unwanted times, loss of sex drive etc.
after a search online i found so-called natural alternatives to tamsulosin, one of the main ones being prostatin, the producers/sellers of these claim the same type of results without the major side effects but i wonder if this is based on fact, hype or a combo of both?
given that i think the consultant advised that my prostate itself is okay and it's the surrounding muscles i'm being prescribed tamsulosin for, is there any evidence that more natural remedies e.g. prostatin can bring about the same result? any feedback/advice welcome. i'll be getting my prescription end of this week and intend to start the 3 month course as instructed but 'if' natural alternatives offer the same resolution i'd be interested to explore them.
