Hello,
Dr Sylvester, Thanks for your help. I am feeling a lot better. The pain and the blood in urine has stopped. However, the need to urinate urgently is still there and during the night I am getting a constant errection and then a need to urinate.
Any advice on this?
Many thanks you have been a great help.
Hi there,
How are you doing now? Hope you are better. Its is natural for someone to get worried and stressed due to an UTI, but Chlamydial infections are rare and the most common one is E.Coli infection.
Probably you are right that your doctor waited for some time to wait for the effect of the antibiotics to work. Usually it takes 24-48 hours for the antibiotics to start working. Please do not overdose your self with antibiotics as it will further add pressure on your kidneys to excrete the antibiotics. Stick to the prescribed dose and make sure you take entire course of medicines even if you find little improvement in the beginning. Follow up with your physician if your symptoms do not reduce in 2 days or so for a urine culture and sensitivity.
If you have any further queries do get in touch with me.
Regards,
Dr Sylvester, MD
Hello Dr Sylvester,
Many Thanks for your reply. I'm surprised my doctor has not asked for a urine sample to do a culture test. Maybe he is waiting to see if the antibiotics work or not?
How long does it usually take for the antibiotics to work? I really am in agony. It it one of those infections that gets worst before it gets better?
Will it help if I take more of the antibiotics than prescribed? I'm worried about the thought of it being Chlamydia! I have all ways used condoms. What is the likely hood of it being Chlamydia?
Thanks again Dr Sylvester.
Hi there,
Hope you are doing better and have atleast started taking the antibiotics as prescribed.
What you describe appears like UTI or a urinary tract infection to me.
Burning sensation and urinary frequency and urgency are the commonest indicators of a UTI. A Urine Culture and sensitivity test should be done to see which is the causative organsism and what antibiotics the organism is sensitive to.
Also many times the sexual partner may actually be harboring the pathogen; leading to recurrent UTIs.
Urinary tract infection is nearly always caused by a single species of bacteria, notably E. coli. Cultures have limitations, however. If a mix of different species is found, the test is considered contaminated and is redone. In addition, even if E. coli is identified, researchers are also looking for variants of these bacteria. Certain types may indicate a higher risk for a second infection, while others may even be protective against recurring infections. Furthermore, some organisms, such as Chlamydia, which is a sexually transmitted organism, may not be detected.
So you see all you need to do is follow-up with your physician for a urine culture test.
If you have any more questions feel free to get in touch with me.
