urinary question

Dear Doctor, I have a question about my first Urinary Tract Infection. On lab work I had trace of protein, 3+ on urine occult blood, trace on leu.esterase,Red blood cells too numerous to count, white blood cells 4 to 8, and a trace of epithelial cells. There was no bacteria. Is this definitely a UTI even though there was no bacteria present? I had pressure, burining and blood in urine. Three months later I had symtoms with no bacteria but trace blood, and trace epithelial cells. I then went to a urologist and he did a culture and said I had a little infection and gave me meds.I still didnt feel better my GP got a EColi count of 50,000 and gave me Cipro. I have since had a bladder, kidney ultrasound and a cystocopy that came back normal and I still have symptoms of mild pressure and some frequent urination. The doctor told me my body still thinks I have the infection because I had it for so long. Is this normal? Im also heading to OBGYN next, but, in my mind I keep thinking about interstitial cystitis.I also seem to have a itchy bladder. I appreciate any input you can give me this is really uncomfortable and upsetting.

UTI is more strongly suggested by the amount of white blood cells present - and at 4-8 WBC this can be suggestive of a UTI.  You may also want to ensure that bacteria that grew out was sensitive to the antibiotics you have received.

That being said, you have had a pretty comprehensive urologic evaluation - including ultrasound and cystoscopy, making things like bladder cancer or polyps less likely.

If there is concern about interstitial cystitis, you may want to consider a potassium sensitivity test - which can be discussed with your urologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
