urinary urgency

-One day  i realized after going to the bathroom... i felt like i needed to go again.( about a month ago)
about 2 weeks after that... On a trip from VT to NY , we had to stop every 20 minutes at every rest stop for me go the bathroom, and sometimes,  i urinated very little compared to how i full i felt.
I went to my GP 4 weeks ago, and he test me - no infection, no blood. clean urine sample.
Some days i feel normal... some days i go the the bathroom 3 times in 1 hour.
i have started to try to stretch the time, since i know i am not full.  sometimes i am totally full and have a normal void.
I just went to my GP this week for a physical, more urine - all clean. I have to go back to him on Sat for blood work.
The last 2 days all i think about is how i am not urinating normally. And i am frustrated to go to the bathroom for almost nothing... i have no leaks or incontinance my muscles are strong.
My GP suggested my next step is to go to a Urologist.  After reading many posts- should i go to a Urologist first or should i go back to my Gyno (which i just saw last month) and i also had a pap, and vaginal sonogram all clean.
Also... any thoughts on what this could be??  i have no pain.. just the feeling of pressure/bloating like a need to go to the bathroom.... more than i should be...
thanks.

Hello,
Sounds like you are experiencing some of what I have been going through. When I first started to get that "urgency" feeling it came and went. Some days good other days not so good. Went to my gyn and she said that your urethra can get dry and prescribed hormone replacement therapy to help the urethra gain some flexibility again. Has not helped much.
She sent me to a urologist and he did a Urodynamics test to check my voiding ability. That test was horrible. He found nothing wrong at all and put me on Vesicare which is suppose to help control the urgency feeling all of the time. Little bit of help not much.
So far I haven't really found any relief. I am hoping that if I stay on the HRT long enough it will help even though I do not like taking Estrogen after all the bad hype that you hear.
Sorry I could not be more helpful as I am still trying to find answers myself. Hang in there.

Hi,

Given that your gynecologist has not noted any significant findings in your pelvic examinations and the diagnostic tests she has requested, then a visit with a urologist may be able to help.

At this point, a urinary tract infection may be ruled out.You had several urine tests done and none showed any significant results.A urine culture may be done to completely exclude the presence of an infection. If your urine culture turns out to be negative an abdominal CT scan (was this done? ) may be done to rule out stones and other structural abnormalities.

A urologic consult my shed some light on this given a complete assessment by your gynecologist.Other underlying systemic conditions  like diabetes and hypertension also
need to be ruled out .

i only wake up maybe once, as i sometimes have tea sometimes too close to bedtime.

i have had urgency and wnet to the bathroom with little urine as many as three times in one hour.... for 1-2 hours and then my bladder sometimes takes a break and "calms down" and i can be normal for a couple of hours and then possibly in the afternoon - more urgency... and then can be calm or not for the evening... I can sometimes even go a day or so with no urgency??? thinking i am ok...and then it is back.

i was just at my gyn one month ago.. she did a pap, a sonogram and whatever else she does down there pressing and proding... ... would that constitue a "pelvic exam" ... actually i noticed it the day i went to her, because i had to go to the bathroom before the exam, after the exam, and then after the sonogram.... and i did think it was weird that day.  I am thinking she would have noticed something...... if there was something to notice. In fact, since i had a "period" when i probably should not have.... she was looking very closely at my insides.. so that is why i am not sure if i should go back to her.. or just go to a urologist...

what would you suggest, if i may ask.

Hi,

Menopause may be associated with changes in urinary patterns. This may be one thing to consider in your case.

Do you wake up at night to urinate? If yes, how many times?

In an hour, how many times do you have the urgency to urinate?

I suggest that you discuss this first with your gynecologist. This may be something expected if you are approaching menopause. A complete pelvic examination may be necessary. Try to keep a diary where you can list down the amount of water taken everyday and the urination patterns that occur during the day.Note signficant triggers like certain exercises or activities and also any change in urinary patterns my be noted.
If this persists after your gynecologic consult seek a referral to a urologist for further evaluation.
