When I started back to school I noticed that I wasn't drinking very much water and therefore became dehydrated which initially caused a bladder infection. My symptoms at that time were pressure on my bladder and the need to urinate all the time. So the doctor put me on a Sulfur medicine for 5 days. I took it and I was ok for about a week and then I started to feel it come on again. So I went back and this time they sent the urine to the lab and it came back that I had UTI they said something about e coli. so they put me back on the same medicine again. This time by the end of the 5 days it didn't even go away. so I called them again and they said to take pyridium for a week and then come back in to do another sample. Well I am feeling mainly a stinging sensation frequently in my UT so I know I must still have the infection and this medicine from what I understand is simply for the pain. The nurse said the doctor doesn't want me to have any more medicine because the Sulfur should have taken care of it. Obviously it didn't and in the mean time I have this infection that is only getting worse. She said that if it didn't come back that i have infection that they would send me to an urologist. That is freaking me out even though Iknow it is most likely infection since that is what I've had. Please give me some possible outcomes of this and why they insist on making me wait instead of trying a different medicine. Thank You

If the urine was sent off for a culture, it can be determined whether it was resistant to the antibiotic or not. If is was resistant to the Bactrim (the likely sulfur-based antibiotic) then another antibiotic (i.e. Cipro) can be tried.
You can consider repeating the urine sample if the symptoms are still continuing, or discuss whether a referral to a urologist is necessary if the symptoms are not improving.
Followup with your personal physician is essential.
