It's important for a doctor to rule out all causes including hypoparthyroidism from what I understand.

However, do keep in mind that for whatever reasons many are not absorbing from the sun either ... in these cases a thorough workup needs to be done with one's doctor to rule out other areas such as parathyroid disease, etc.

Vitamin D isn't obtained from food -- it's obtained from exposure to the sun.  Some foods have Vitamin D added to it, but the way we're supposed to get it is to get outside on a sunny day.
