Chewing Gum

OKay I have never been a gum chewer -  but Someone suggested today that it can aid weightloss and I am wondering if this is true....

Their idea was predicated on the fact that that mastication (chewing) uses up energy and burns calories -  so teh more you chew your food before you swallow it teh better.... if this is true then surely chewing gum is burning a few calories while you are not actually intaking any.... any thoughts on this?

It makes me hungry because it gets your digestive system working through mastication, your tummy thinks you are chewing so food will follow.... but it curbs my hunger because of the mint taste in my mouth - gues your body gets used to the food not following lol.

Aww thanks Ranae -  I am 4lb away from my lowest weight in 10 years (172.6lbs) so I am excited...

I am sooo happy to see it coming off so well -  but starting today I am adding a fair bit of weight training so I have been told to expect it to go up for a few weeks till the added muscle starts burning off more calories....

I, too, like the flavored water or else my water has to be ice cold.  Mint and orange .. not my favorite .. lolll   However, they make orange SF gum that would go with orange or a fruit flavor of some kind.  Personally, my favorite is cinnamon or wintergreen.

Have I told you lately how well YOU are Doing and what an inspiration you are??? ;p

Here's some research found on the Internet ...

A research study presented at the 2007 Annual Scientific Meeting of The Obesity Society, found that chewing gum before an afternoon snack helped reduce hunger, diminish cravings and promote fullness among individuals who limit their overall calorie intake. Calorie intake from snacks was significantly reduced by 25 calories. Overall, this study demonstrates the benefits of chewing gum and highlights the potential role of chewing gum in appetite control and weight management. Nutritionists say that even small changes in calories can have an impact in the long term. This research study supports the role of chewing gum as an easy, practical tool for weight management.

Marion Hetherington, D.Phil., Professor of Biopsychology, Glasgow Caledonian University in Glasgow, Scotland led the research study and discussed the potential role of chewing gum on appetite control.

Gilbert Leveille, Ph.D., Executive Director, Wrigley Science Institute, was also available to discuss study findings and research on the benefits of chewing gum related to weight management and other areas including oral health, stress relief, and focus, alertness and concentration.

Study background: In the 60-person study, participants aged 18 to 54 were asked to consume a sweet and salty afternoon snack after chewing a sweetened gum or not chewing gum. Hunger, appetite and cravings were rated immediately after lunch, and then hourly.

* Chewing gum significantly reduced caloric intake by 25 calories and specifically reduced sweet snack intake by 39 calories; salty snacks were decreased by 11 calories.

* Hunger and desire to eat were significantly suppressed by chewing gum at one, two and three hour intervals after lunch.

* Participants reported that chewing gum improved their mood by reducing anxiety and stress, and increasing contentment and relaxation.

* In a similar study among individuals not actively trying to manage their weight, chewing gum reduced snack intake by average of 36 calories.

* Data combined from both studies found that chewing gum reduced intake of the sweet snack in particular by an average of 47 calories.

Well, I'm with twehner5, I wasn't going to add anything either, but I do like that jaw line.  lol (I actually believe there might be something there - every part of the body needs exercise).

Chewing your food more slowly as Paul McKenna says makes it take longer to eat a meal; it takes at least 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you are full (or is it the other way around? sorry, bit of brain fog going on this morning. haha) - anyway it takes at least 20 minutes to realize you are full, so if you pork down your meal in only 5 minutes, the "I'm full" message doesn't have a chance to register so you either end up ending the meal still hungry or eating more food to get "full".

I've also heard/read that chewing gum will help curb your appetite - not sure whether it's just the idea of putting something in your mouth (like some people smoke) to make you think about something besides hunger or maybe it's the sweet taste that makes you think you are eating something.

Unfortunately, due to a dental problem, I can no longer chew gum - I guess that's why my jaw line is getting floppy, huh?. LOL.   But you guys keep on chewing.

I wasn't going to comment as I have nothing to add re: weight-loss or staving off hunger.  But, after the "cute jaw-line" remark (thanks, JoyRenee - I noticed that RIGHT AWAY about you!!!), mind if I tell you one thing gum does for me?

I get horribly sleepy when I'm driving my noon bus route.  NOT GOOD!  I'm partially out in the country, on icy, snowy roads with a bunch of 4k students.  I remembered reading that chewing minty gum helps with sleepiness.  YEP!  It works.

SOOOOO, Now, I'll be "The Perky Bus Driver With the Great Jawline!"  Gotta love this forum!

Well gum does have some calories. Like the one I have right now is 5 calories. It is supposed to stave off hunger. And cinnamon gum is best if you're feeling nauseous!

It does work your jaw muscles and helps define your jaw. When I was in middle and highschool I would chew gum day-in and day-out and I had a very defined jawline. People often commented on how pretty my jaw looked. I know, that sounds REALLY weird, but that's what happened.

I'm definitely not a big gum chewer anymore but I keep a stash in my purse to stave off cravings.

I dont like Paul Mckenna very much - but the problem with chewing gum as I see it is it makes you hungry as your digestive juices are created starting in your saliva and then nothing solid is going down to satisfy it.....

Ohhh well every little help I can get I will take -  so will chew more and maybe a couple of sticks of gum a day just incase it helps x

Chewing gum helps you with hunger control, i dont know about the chewing part just that when you are chewing it you are focused on it and your mind goes off food! The part about your food is true the guys name is Paul McKenna and he teaches this people actually i saw on tv!! he says to chew your food slowly and i like 30 time or something (cant remember exactly) that way you enjoy it more and you get full faster!!! This guy he teaches a whole program but this is one part of it its called i can make you thin!
