They teach you how to do self hypnosis, because that is the idea, to learn to do if for yourself eventually, but you have to work at it and set aside some time each day to reinforce the principles. It's just a form of meditation.... but it's definitely a good idea and worth trying. Again, though, you don't just lie there and act passive. You still have to have the motivation to succeed, or you can override the messages.
