I DID IT....I actually DID IT! So proud!

by Cheyenne_08, Jun 24, 2009 11:49AM
Well ladies, my goal for the end of the year is to run a 5K....well, I have NEVER been a runner in my life so that is a pretty big goal for me! When I was a kid, I couldn't run and I was always the fat kid. Anyways, I was DETERMINED to run a 5k. So last night, I was laying in bed and decided that I was going to run the 5K loop on the treadmill in under 45 minutes. (15 min mile is kinda slow pace, but I really wanted to set an achievable goal). Well, I actually did it! I ran the 3.1 miles in 40 minutes 30 seconds!!!!!!! 4.5 minutes less than I was expecting :-) I am so proud and I can't wait to shave time off of that so I can actually run a 5K with a chance of winning. But right now, WHO CARES! I finished 3.1 miles!!! lol

I just feel so proud of myself for finishing it in the first place. I have started the 5K loop a few times before but always quit after a mile. I decided today that i was NOT QUITING!!! WOO HOO! HAPPY DAY!

I could have never imagined doing it either....and it has taken me 8 months of walking/jogging/running to build up to 3.1 miles! Like I said, I was WAY too out of shape for that! But, I worked on the treadmill every other day and kept shaving time off my mile and working towards faster speeds! You can do it!!!

A really great website for me is fit day . com, just remove the spaces. Or calorie counter . com.

I participated in my first 5 K event in May.  It was a fundraiser for Lyme disease, which I have.  It may be a bit unusual for the afflicted to run for the cause, but it was a very satisfying way for me to defy my illness.

Like you, I trained a lot on the treadmill, but the event was the first time I jogged (not sure if my speed qualifies as "running") outside or in a group setting.  I was very embarrassed at first when I got there, because everyone else look so fit (I'm ~240 lbs).  But I did the whole thing, with no walking breaks, in 44 minutes.  Hardly a world record, but a personal milestone.

The most touching part for me was near the beginning:  We looped around and came back by the starting place as part of the route.  I was already behind the "real" athletes, but respectably ahead of the walkers.  As I passed through, I heard someone yell "Oh!  Here comes another RUNNER!" and people cheered me on.

Before I got sick, I never ran (or jogged, whatever you want to call it).  It was a wonderful feeling to be acknowledged as a runner, even if I'm far from being a "pro."

I'd encourage others to look for walk/bike/run benefits for causes close to them, or even just what's local!  It's a great way to set a fitness goal, help others, AND feel good about yourself.

Wow! Your story makes me feel so good! You did a great job, believe me! I ran mine is 40 minutes and 30 seconds. HOWEVER, I am only 183 (ha, only.....) and I have been running on the treadmill for 8 months lol! I am really proud that you went out and ran like that. Who cares if you were the fastest, you RAN IT and that is all that matters!
