Starting this week

by evthing4reason, Mar 13, 2008 09:20AM
So.....here goes. The last few years I've been up and down on the scales. About 2 years ago I started yoga and watching what i ate (no diet, just being aware, and cut back alcohol) and lost some weight before my wedding (5'4" 140lbs at wedding) my goal weight is 130-135. About 6 months later I stopped going to yoga, started suffering w/severe back pain (and depression) and ended up on the coach everyday b/c of pain. So in the fall I started yoga (and chiropractor) and watching my diet again (was about 155lbs) and wanted to get fit before getting pregnant, instead I kept gaining weight which was very frustrating.Happily I got pregnant the first month but weighed 163lbs. The  first trimester I lost weight, but at 5 months I lost the baby due to a chormosone defect. So right now I weigh about 153lbs. Today I am starting yoga again, this week I have been trying to exercise but can only manage 5 minutes on the exercise bike (spent a a few days in hospital then 5 days of going evrey 8 hours for iv antibiotics 10 days after losing the baby).
I wanna get healthy again for when we try to have another baby. also I'm going away in a few weeks to the Domincan and staying at a large resort and will have to do a lot of walking. Mt biggest problem, besides getting my energy back, is that I'm home on sick leave right now and have been eating junk all the time
so today I am officially starting my "get healthy" plan (which i don't really have a plan, but today is the day i'm starting to make changes)

Welcome aboard!  First I would like to say that I am so sorry for your loss.  Deprivation is never good so I like your approach of being aware and educating yourself about food rather than eliminating things.  I am a chocoholic so I need to have a little everyday but I make sure to mainly eat veggies, whole grains, and a small amount of lean meat everyday (usually about 3oz chicken cooked).  I joined Weight Watchers on January 17 and at my first weigh in I was 161.4 (I am 5'5").  Today is the beginning of week 9 for me and I weigh 146.8.  The main changes I've made are that I eat at scheduled times rather than picking all day.  I have learned to ignore my sweet tooth (for the most part) in favor of veggies and fruits.  I eat a very high fiber diet and limit the amount of meat I eat though I still eat meat every day (just a very small serving of it....my plate is mostly veggies).   I drink nothing sweetened, mostly I drink tea and water.  I eat breakfast which is something I never did before but now it's my biggest meal of the day.  It's good that you are exercising, it's very healthy .  For me that's one stumbling block.  I used to spend a couple hours 4 to 5 days a week in the gym and did not lose an ounce mostly because I did not change my eating habits.  I hope to force myself back there within the next month.  When you cut calories you will be hungry but that's okay....in order to be successful we need to get comfortable with our hunger.  Very quickly you will get used to your new way of eating, you just have to be patient with yourself.  Also, as I have said before, I believe those most successful with losing weight take it off slowly (1 to 2 pounds a week).  And mostly don't get discouraged if one week the scale doesn't budge or even (gasp!) goes up a notch, stick to your guns and you will reach your goal.  Good luck to you...Keep us "posted".

Sore is good as long as you're not too sore.  Keep plugging away and you'll reach your goal before you know it.

Good for you. Just plug away at it. I have to be honest with I did Weight Watchers and honestly it does work. They help you to learn how to eat properly, but that is up to you.
Yoga is a good physical activity. Stick with it. Presently I am doing pool therapy 3xs a week and it is my therapy for now. I was sick for 2months and lost 30lbs and not the good way. So plug away it and you will get there.

Good Luck and God Bless
