What can I expect of my moms extreme low weight?

by Ms BW, Mar 20, 2007 12:00AM
My mom is 5'2" and 78yrs old.  She weighs 80 lbs is a smoker and works 20-30hrs a week.  She has had a thyroid problem all her life and I suspect her meds need adjusting, however she will not see a physician.  She says she eats plenty.  I don't live near here but I have photos and testimony as to her weight.  My question is:  How much longer can she live like this?  Doesn't your heart fail at some point?  What can I expect.  I'm afraid for her but she's stubborn and won't budge.  Aside from this she is of sound mind.

The physical description could have ben for my aunt. She is 78, 5feet 2" and is 82 lbs. She doesn't smoke but lives alone and is very physically active. I don't think the weight in itself is an issue. My aunt used to weigh 76lbs for a long time and only recently did she gain some weight. Your mom should definitely see a doctor to make sure she is okay but don't worry about the weight.
It would be good if she stopped smoking but you will probably have a tough time convincing her of that.
Good luck.
