What works?

I have yo-yo'd for 14 years. I have found diets that work but of course when you stop and bad habbits sneak back in the weight comes back on (plus a few more pounds).

I am not normally one for New Years Resolutions or New Me challenges but decided this year I am going to do it. My plan is to lose 67lbs from 30th December 2012 to the 16th July 2013.

There are lots of fads, diets, ideas, aids out there but I have decided for me it is about cutting out the unhealthy snacking, the late night eating, the grazing behaviours and cutting down my portion sizes. This way I can live like this without considering it a diet, a short term fix, it can become a way of life because I am still eating the meals I like, the meals I coook for everyone else I am just eating less of it.

I have also tried to drink 8 8oz glasses of water every day to keep hydrated, to flush out my digestive system and to help me not to feel hungry, usually a glass of water takes away my thoughts of eating and any hunger pangs.

The tough part for me is I have IBS and any change in my dietry habbits tends to flar it up -  I have had 2 attacks so far this year that have resulted in me looking 8 months pregnant and having a lot of pain which reduces my ability to exercise.

I am using the wii fit at home every day and trying to get to the gym 3 times a week just working on cardio stuff right now.

I acknowledge that apart from being over weight I am unfit and weak.

So what are you trying? what is working for you?

You've got the right idea about portion control.  I have dieted several years, too and now that I've reached age 62, it doesn't come off as easily as in the past.  Might check this with your doctor first, but I have problems w/my bowels, too.  I was tested several years ago for slow bowels and they couldn't come up with a reason (rules out IBS), but advised me to use MiraLax every night . . . along w/a fiber capsule twice daily (Metamucil or Fibercon).  This has kept me pretty regular.  You're doing everything right as far as the dieting goes, but you have to come to the conclusion that this isn't just a "diet" but a change of eating habits.  So, don't quit!

You might want to get checked for hypothyroidism, which is notorious for causing slow bowel function/constipation.

New_Me - you've certainly got the right idea and are going the right direction.  Best of luck to you.

I have started this 'journey' in a whole different mindset to usual -  I am so excited about the resuts and proud of my determination and commitment to it -  12.4lb off since 30th December 2012.

I basically jsut over ate and under exercised -  sounds simple but has taken me YEARS to click my mind into understanding it.

Hey :)

What really helped me making better choices was "Inside Out Weight Loss". I didn't go all the way through the program, but listened to this or that episode. I could mak most use of Episodes 214 - 220. Whenever I feel like my bad habits are sneaking back in on me, I listen to these programs again and restart being more conscious about how the stuff I eat makes me feel. Here you can find all the episodes. I think you can also get them on iTunes.

For my losing 11 kg so far, I didn't do anything else new. In fact since I moved into a new city in September, I rather worked out less. I signed up for a gym again just now, because I really miss it.

Thank you for your reply.
I have been tested recently for the things you mention -  not the PCOD but other than the weight I have no other obvious symptoms of that.

My problem is addiction to food and especially to late night 'grazing'

As I said in my original post most of your other advice I have initiated this time round already. I am seeing good results so far. I have to make sure I push through my impatience hat usually leads me down a path of lack of motivation which results in me giving up.

Thanks again,

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
Since you have IBS, you must consult a doctor to find out whether you have problems like hypothyroidism and diabetes, and maybe even PCOD which is making weight loss difficult. People who are successful in losing weight and maintaining it are the ones who make lifestyle changes which are acceptable to them, their palate and their working style.
To do this you must look for healthier cooking options for meals you love, and slowly cut down on the fat in it so as to not irritate your taste buds much.
It's best to join a nutrition expert and a physical trainer and follow their advice. Incorporating yoga into this regimen takes stress out of this exercise to lose weight. Also the diet should contain more of green leafy vegetables (that you can tolerate because of IBS), fruits and protein and less of spaghetti, potato etc.  I suggest you eat frequent small meals and stop counting calories. It is best to eat lots of fruits and non-starchy green veggies (that you can tolerate because of IBS), go slow on fats, eat carbohydrates in moderation and increase your protein intake (lean cuts, whites of eggs etc). Drink plenty of water and non fattening fluids such as clear soups etc. Look for hidden calories in salads and soups and avoid them (eg: cheese, butter, dressings etc).
Also, you need to exercise regularly. A combination of aerobic, strength training and stretches works best. Many people find it difficult to fit an exercise regimen into their lives. The best way is to join a gym. If that is not possible, try building exercise into your daily life. If you lead a busy life, then walk to work, or to bus stand etc, climb stairs instead of using lifts, walk while talking on cell phone, or briskly walk to any place you are going to. See how you can change your lifestyle to incorporate exercise. Hope this helps. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.
